Known as "Kirtag", "Kirchtag" or "Kirchweih", the fair is held once a year, generally on the feast day of the patron saint of a local church, the village, or even the state.
In Salzburg City, the famous "Ruperti-Kirtag" runs on the days on and around September 24th - the feast of the SalzburgerLand's patron saint, St. Rupert - this is very much an event for young and old, a place where visitors like to take full advantage of the opportunity to show off the finery of their own local folk costumes.
Rupert, the SalzburgerLand's patron saint, came to Salzburg about 1300 years ago from Worms, where he was bishop, founding the abbey of St. Peter's (the oldest in Austria) and the Nonnberg convent, which was also the first to put down roots in the Alps.
It was at this time that the salt trade began to flourish.
This explains why we so often see St. Rupert depicted together with a salt barrel.
