St. Michaelskirche - St. Michael's Church

St. Michael's Church is the oldest parish church in Salzburg's burghers' town. It stands on ancient ground between the Residence and the Waagplatz. It served as a palace chapel and parish church up to the 12th century. In its double function the church was divided into two sectors: the upper sector was reserved to the emperor and his entourage and was accessed from the palace. The lower sector was accessed from the market square and open to the townsfolk. Architectural history The small rococo church on Residence Square already existed prior to 800. It has belonged to St. Peter's Monastery since the High Middle Ages, which was concerned with maintaining the church. It was quickly rebuilt after the fires in 823 and 1167 but lost its former spiritual significance when the parish rights were transferred to the Liebfrauenkirche (Church of St. Mary). St. Nicholas Parish Church Dienten

The parish church of Dienten not only has a fantastic location on the Kirchbühel against the backdrop of the Hochkönig, its interior is also impressive. Especially the gothic star-rib vault from the time of its construction and the high altar by Benedikt Faistenberger (1660). The altar contains the Gothic statues of the church patron Saint Nicholas, as well as the holy bishops Rupertus and Erasmus. The mining saints Daniel and Barbara (Faistenberger 1660) on the altar right and left outside, as well as the large "sacrament tablet" by Wolfgang Zach on the right wall of the chancel, remind us of the great times of the Dientner iron mining. The two side altars are dedicated to the apostles Peter (with key) and Paul (with sword and book) (Faistenberger 1660). Already in the 12th century a Romanesque church building on the Kirchbühel. The present church was consecrated on June ...

St. Peter's Monastery Cemetery Catacombs [Erzabtei St. Peter Friedhof]

Lasting Impressions: The CatacombsA highlight of St. Peter's Cemetery are the catacombs, which are hewn out of the Mönchsberg itself and date back to late antiquity. The mystical caves served both as hermitages as well as burial sites. These Early Christian catacombs may be visited year-round. The entrance is located at the graves of Mozart’s sister Nannerl and Michael Haydn. After 48 steps you find "Gertrauden Chapel", dating back to 1178. 36 further steps up lies the "Maximus Chapel". Admission is free with the Salzburg Card. Historical Background The church and abbey of St. Peter’s were founded by the Frankish missionary Rupert. Particularly remarkable is the fact that the monastic brotherhood of that time still exists, making it the oldest monastic order in the German-speaking world today. After several fires, the church and abbey were restored in a number of ...

    St. Sebastian's Church Cemetery

History and Special Features The history of St. Sebastian’s Church goes back to Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach. He had the church built between 1505 and 1512. In the 18th century, the church – which had since become derelict – was demolished and replaced by a hall church reflecting the style of the Late Baroque. Special features of St. Sebastian’s Church include the magnificent Rococo portal and an impressive gate separating the entrance porch from the main nave. The high altar is adorned by a wonderful Madonna with Child from the year 1611. Modern Reconstruction The devastating fire in 1818 – which also destroyed broad swaths of the right historical district – didn’t spare St. Sebastian’s Church either. The ceiling fresco and the painting at the high altar depicting St. Sebastian both fell victim to the flames. Restoration of the church began in the early 19th ...
