On Christmas Eve in 1818, it was first heard in the St. Nikolai parish church for the first time. Since then, countless visitors flock to Oberndorf, especially at Christmas time, to experience the Christmas miracle up close.
On Christmas Eve in 1818, in the newly errected St. Nicola church in Oberndorf, the local priest of the time, Joseph Mohr, asked the stand-in organist Franz Gruber to write a melody for 2 solo voices, a choir and a guitar accompanyment. Gruber delivered his composition the same night which was then played for the first time in the evening service
