On the almost 2 km long Karkogel summer toboggan run even the parents become children again. It’s just too much fun to whiz around curves, high-speed sections and through tunnels on the little yellow cars, down from the mountain station at 1,133m and into the valley. From the age of six, children may ride alone but younger ones feel safer with Mum or Dad.
The tobogganing fun on the Karkogel continues even in winter – then however, on the natural sledge run which starts directly at the mountain station.
The scenic Postalm is a beautifully situated summer and winter paradise. It is the largest Alpine pasture area in Austria with 45km². Even just crossing over the Postalm Toll-Road, from Abtenau to Strobl on the Wolfgangsee or back, is an experience in itself. For those who would like to discover even more, you can wander the 100km of sign-posted footpaths and mountain hiking routes, come into one of the numerous mountain huts or take a mountain bike tour. Experienced climbers, test your skills on the Postalm Via Ferrata.
In winter, the Postalm is a real insider tip. All the ski slopes of this small but fine ski area, lead down onto the central car park, so that no-one can get lost. For those who would rather be off the slopes, you can glide through the cross-country ski trails, wander along the prepared paths or go across country using touring skis or snowshoes.
Culinary Insider’s Tip
When in Abtenau, be sure to make a visit to the Sonnleit’n Taste-Sensation Farmhouse. In the farm shop, delicacies are arranged one after the other and of course, everything is homemade. There’s butter, bacon, sausages, bread, jam, honey and especially the spicy cheese, which is made from pure hay-milk.
