Just the proximity to the city of Salzburg, with its diverse attractions, makes Grödig attractive as a holiday destination. It takes only a few minutes to reach the city centre by car or by public transport. Due to the proximity to the motorway, the Salzkammergut or Tennengau and Pongau are easily accessible with their attractions such as the Hallein Salt Mine or the Hohenwerfen Castle.
Grödig would not be Grödig without the legendary Untersberg Mountain, where according to legend Emperor Karl V lives together with his subjects. For those who choose not to walk up it, the Untersberg Cable Car reaches the mountain station and thus the summit at 1,973 meters in only 15 minutes. You will be rewarded with fantastic panoramic views of the city and the Berchtesgadener Land.
The area surrounding the Untersberg Mountain was declared a nature reserve. With its many quiet and shady forest trails as well as a refreshing Kneipp facility, it is an ideal recreation area.
By the way: in winter, the Untersberg mountain becomes the skiing mountain directly at the gates of the city.
During Advent, Grödig relies on traditions and customs. Since 1973, the small, fine Christmas market around the Church of St. Leonhard has provided the ideal Christmas mood. On offer are lovingly crafted arts and crafts, Christmas ornaments, wooden toys and naturally fragrant roasted chestnuts, hot punch and home-baked Christmas cookies.
Tip for children: there are delicious cookies in the Christmas bakery!
A visit to the Christmas market is particularly attractive, fascinating, and admittedly, also a little creepy, when the Grödig Krampus with their loud bells and their eerie carved masks make their mischief around 5th December.
