Those particularly fond of H2O will love SalzburgerLand: white water rivers call for exciting rafting tours, thermal baths for relaxing tranquillity, freshly caught fish for moments of culinary pleasure and the many churches and chapels for taking a break and looking within.

Splendid valley and mountain lakes

When in SalzburgerLand, you’re never far away from a source of fresh water: 180 natural lakes, 22 artificial swimming lakes and more than 60 outdoor pools provide the ideal conditions for water fanatics. The lakes have crystal clear water with drinking water quality. Sailing, surfing, stand-up paddle boarding, fishing or boating are refreshing and fun. The countless pasture and mountain lakes are considered among the most pristine waters in SalzburgerLand. The UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Salzburger Lungau contains more than 60 mountain lakes — more than anywhere else in Europe. Among the many mesmerising hiking destinations are Reedsee lake in Bad Gastein, Seewaldsee lake in St. Kolomann, Tappenkarsee lake in Kleinarl or the Hochgebirgsstausee lake in Kaprun.

Streams, waterfalls, rivers, canyons and ravines

When it rages, sprays, cracks and gushes, it’s usually a sign that the water is using its immense strength to make its way through the rock, where it often reaches impressive heights. SalzburgerLand is a paradise for rafting and kayaking enthusiasts: Especially the Lammer and Saalach rivers are considered hot spots for these activities. The Strubklamm ravine is particularly suitable for canyoning, whereas you can make your way through the Salzachöfen canyon via flying fox. If this is all a little too much for you, then why not take a walk through the ravines via the secure trails such as the Liechtensteinklamm ravine, the Lammeröfen canyon in Tennengau, the Vorderkaserklamm ravine in Salzburg’s Saalachtal valley or the Sigmund-Thun Klamm ravine in Zell am See-Kaprun. Or you could also get splashed by one of the many waterfalls, such as the 380-metre-high Krimmler waterfalls in the Hohe Tauern National Park.

Natural health at SalzburgerLand’s thermal baths

Spa and swimming holidays are an old tradition in SalzburgerLand. The healing properties of the mountain water didn’t stay a secret for very long and has been attracting kings, emperors and sheikhs from all over the world to Salzburg’s towns and valleys. Especially the Gasteinertal valley, where to this day millions of litres of radon-containing healing water continue to gush from the springs, have achieved a global reputation. SalzburgerLand has three thermal facilities and three wellness oases, all of which cover entirely different needs.

Culinary specialities from Salzburg’s lakes and streams

Salzburg’s prince bishops used to have freshly caught arctic char from Fuschlsee lake delivered to the city via horse and cart once a week. To this day, fish is considered among the finest and most popular dishes in SalzburgerLand. The drinking water quality of the fresh mountain streams and the deep lakes ensure excellent quality. 15 locations are recommended by the Via Culiniaria food guide. A particularly special address is Walter Grüll’s fish speciality shop, one the most successful caviar producers in the world.
